How to Fix Clumpy Mascara

How to Fix Clumpy Mascara

Spidery lashes were a major beauty trend back in the 90s, and they made a comeback in the last decade thanks to brands like Prada and Gucci that brought this dramatic makeup look to the runway.

Unless you’re going for a grunge look, thick and clumpy mascara is far from ideal. In fact, anyone who has ever used mascara would probably agree that unintentionally clumpy mascara is pretty annoying — especially if it ruins an otherwise perfect eye look.

Mascara can clump for a number of reasons, from how you apply it to the type of mascara wand you’re using.

While clumpy lashes are difficult to fix (lest you risk ruining the rest of your eye makeup), it is possible to prevent your mascara from clumping altogether.

Here are 10 tricks that will help you fix clumpy mascara and avoid clumps altogether.

Use the Right Technique

Everyone seems to have their own technique for enhancing their lashes. But believe it or not, there is a correct way to apply mascara. Basically, you want to apply the bulk of the mascara at the root and not the tip of the lash. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Hold the mascara wand along the base of your eyelashes, getting as close to the root as you can. Make sure that the bristles separate the individual lashes.
  2. Brush upward and forward to capture each lash. Repeat this step on the top of your lashes.  This ensures that all your lashes are coated with mascara.
  3. Move the wand from side to side as you brush from the root to the tip. Do this gently, especially if your lashes are on the shorter and sparser side. Otherwise, you run the risk of clumping.

Double Cleanse

Beauty experts have told us time and time again about the importance of removing makeup before going to bed. Diligent as we may be, sometimes traces of makeup get left behind, especially when using waterproof formulas that are more stubborn to wash off.

Leftover mascara can cause your next application to look clumpier than it otherwise would. Double cleansing is an easy way to prevent this and will ensure that yesterday’s mascara won’t mess with a fresh application.

Apply a Lash Primer

Like face primer, mascara primer preps the eyelashes for mascara application. It can enhance the length, thickness, and curl of your lashes, resulting in even application without clumps — a must-have for those with short and sparse lashes. If you want gorgeous, clump-free lashes, invest in a good primer and apply it before your mascara.

Choose the Right Mascara Wand

Choose the Right Mascara Wand

Mascara wands come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, some are more prone to clumping than others. As a general rule, opt for a mascara with a molded plastic wand as these comb through the lashes effortlessly, resulting in a super-smooth application with good lash separation.

A fine-toothed mascara brush is great for adding length with minimal clumping, whereas an hourglass-shaped brush with dense bristles allows a more even distribution of product from root to tip. Experiment with different wands to find out which one works best on your lashes!

Don’t Put On Too Much Product

The same way piling on foundation results in cakey makeup, applying one too many coats of mascara will end up looking thick and clumpy. When doing multiple coats of mascara, it’s two is ideal for maximum length and volume. Any more than that and you run the risk of spidery lashes.

Additionally, you’ll want to remove the excess product from the wand before applying mascara. This gives you more control of how much mascara goes onto your lashes so that you can build up the length and volume to your liking. To do this, scrape off the excess inside the tube or wipe the applicator on a tissue.

Comb Your Lashes

Comb Your Lashes With a Spoolie or Toothbrush

If you’ve ever attempted to wipe off clumps of mascara with your fingers, then you know that this usually pushes your lashes together and makes things worse, so don’t touch them! Instead, you can use a lash comb or spoolie to comb your lashes from the root to tip. The bristles do a great job of picking up the excess product and clumps without irritating your eyes. The idea of combing your lashes might sound a little extra, but we promise you that this trick is super helpful when you’re in a pinch!

Pro Tip: A clean toothbrush also works!

Avoid Pumping the Mascara

You don’t need to be a makeup artist to tell you that this is one of the biggest makeup no-nos. Pumping your mascara wand in and out causes air to enter the tube, which dries the formula and results in clumpy mascara.

Want to know a better way to load your wand with mascara? Swirl it inside the tube. Not only is this a more effective way to coat the wand with product, it also reaches the mascara from the farther areas of the tube. Simply pull the wand halfway up and move the applicator in circles before pulling it out.

Warm the Mascara With Hot Water

Mascara contains waxes and oils that can harden up, making it hard to work with. If you can get any product on your lashes at all, it will likely be uneven and clumpy. To resolve this, place your mascara tube in a bowl of hot water. Let it sit for a few minutes to warm up the formula. Carefully take it out (use a pair of tongs if you have to, you don’t want to burn your fingers!) Once it has cooled, check the consistency of the mascara. It should be slightly runnier and apply on smoothly.

Rehydrate Dried Mascara

Mascara will inevitably dry up after some time passes. Fortunately, you can revive dried-out mascara by adding a few drops of eye drops, contact lens solution, or saline solution to restore some moisture.

Toss It Out

Mascara has a shelf life of three months and it starts expiring the second you open it. Keep an eye on how long you’ve had your tube in your makeup bag. The reason for your clumped lashes could be due to the fact that your mascara is already expired!
