Whether you love a bold lip look or prefer more subtle lips, you can’t go wrong with a matte lipstick. This highly pigmented lipstick has a gorgeous velvety finish with long-lasting color. Its versatility makes it a must-have for any makeup collection.
Compared to creamy or satin lipstick, matte lipstick is formulated with more waxes than oils in order to make it less shiny and give it a matte finish. Apply a lip scrub onto your lips and gently massage using circular motions to exfoliate the dead skin. You can make your own DIY lip scrub by mixing sugar with a little bit of honey or coconut oil. Alternatively, you can use a soft bristle toothbrush to gently exfoliate your lips. Just be careful when exfoliating, as scrubbing too hard can damage your skin.
Step 2: Moisturize

Step 4: Line Your Lips
Unlike other types of lipsticks, which you can gradually build up to your desired coverage, matte lipsticks offer full coverage with just one swipe. With such strong color, mistakes are more visible and easier to make. That’s where a lip liner comes in handy. Outlining your lips before matte lipstick application can help prevent any crooked strokes and ensure the cleanliness of your matte lips. Using a lip liner can also prevent the matte lipstick from feathering outside the outline.
There are two ways to line your lips: you can follow the natural curve of your lip line for a more natural look or overline your lips for a fuller pout.
To line your lips, start by drawing an “X” on the top of your upper lip to mark the cupid’s bow. Then, draw a line from one tip of the cupid’s bow down to the inner curve of your lip, and repeat on the other side. Moving to the bottom lip, trace the curve at the center of your lips, then connect it to the outer corners of your mouth. Then, use a lip brush to soften the edges of the lip liner inward, toward the center of the lips. This will help the liner and lipstick blend together more seamlessly.
Step 5: Apply Matte Lipstick
Once your lips have been fully prepped, it’s finally time to apply your matte lipstick. You can apply it straight from the lipstick tube or use a lip brush to paint your lips.
For the first application method, use the tip of the lipstick bullet to outline your lips. Fill in the rest of your lips, starting at the center of the bottom lip and working your way out toward the lip line. Press your top and bottom lips together to distribute the lip product. Then, apply matte lipstick on the top lip, working from the center to the outer edges of your lip line.
For the second method, dip a lip brush in the lipstick, then use the sharp edge of the brush to outline your lips. Then, paint your lips using short strokes, being careful not to go over your lip line.

Step 6: Blot the Excess Product
If you accidentally applied too much product, you can remove some of the excess color by blotting your lips. Just make sure to do this immediately after application, before the product sets. This will remove the excess color, help the lipstick dry faster, and ensure long-lasting wear.
Place a clean tissue in between your top and bottom lips, then press them together for a few seconds. Open your mouth and carefully remove the tissue.
Step 7: Clean up the Edges
Even a professional makeup artist can struggle with applying matte lipstick. If your matte lip doesn’t turn out perfectly, don’t worry. You can use some concealer to tidy up the edges, cover up any smudges, and achieve a super crisp look.
Use a clean brush to apply a full-coverage concealer around the edges of your lips, then blend it out.

After applying matte lipstick, you’re pretty much good to go! There are, however, a few additional touches you can add to enhance your matte lipstick:
- To intensify the matte look, lightly brush a translucent setting powder over your lips.
- For a dewy look, top your lips with clear lip gloss.
