How to Wear Neon Eyeshadow

How to Wear Neon Eyeshadow

When it comes to eyeshadow, it’s easy to go for the same pinks, browns, and grays you use for everyday makeup looks. As much as you love your neutrals, it’s easy to cling to them like a safety blanket. As a result, you probably rarely venture out of this comfort zone. Yet, there exists a whole spectrum of hues just waiting to be discovered. Just open your eyeshadow palette and see which shadows remain untouched. For many, these are typically neon colors.

Neon eyeshadows are a far cry from the neutral shades you’re used to, and the idea of wearing such bold colors can be pretty daunting, especially to first-timers. But you don’t need to be a professional makeup artist to try them out. In fact, applying neon eyeshadow is one of the easiest ways to create a statement makeup look.

Whether you’re dressing up for a special occasion or just want to switch up your makeup routine, a neon eyeshadow is definitely worth trying out. If you’re ready to take the plunge, keep reading for a step-by-step guide on how to apply neon eyeshadow.

Step 1: Choose Your Eyeshadow

Choose your neon eyeshadow colors.

When it comes to eyeshadow (and makeup in general), choose whatever colors you want! There are really no rights and wrongs when it comes to expressing your creativity. But if you ever find yourself staring at your eyeshadow palette, confused by an overwhelming variety of options, here are a few tips and tricks for choosing colors that will really elevate your look.

Contrast Your Skin

One of the best ways to pull off a neon eyeshadow is by choosing a color that works well with your skin tone. Bright colors like neon orange, yellow, and pink look amazing on darker skin tones, whereas deeper neon colors such as purple, red, and blue suit fairer complexions.

Additionally, your skin tone has an underlying color known as an undertone. There are three types of undertones: warm, cool, and neutral. If you want to make a statement, opt for a color that contrasts with your natural undertone. Otherwise, you may end up looking washed out by your shadow.

Complement Your Eye Color

Another trick you can try is to choose a neon shadow that complements your eye color, which involves some simple color theory. Basically, you want to choose the hue opposite to your eye color on the color wheel. Also known as complementary colors, these opposing hues perfectly contrast with one another. Electric blues and luminous greens bring out the warmth in brown eyes, whereas hot pinks and bright oranges intensify blue eyes. Fiery reds and enchanting purples enhance the richness of green eyes, while those with hazel eyes can experiment with eyeshadow colors for either brown or green eyes.

Pick a Finish

Most neon eyeshadow palettes come with a selection of matte shadows, but you can also find neon colors with a shimmery finish. Matte eyeshadows have a deeper and more pigmented effect that’s perfect for creating a bold statement look, but they can be a little intimidating if you’re just starting out. If you’re not ready to jump all the way into the neon makeup trend just yet, you can start with shimmer shadows, which are generally easier to pull off.

Step 2: Decide on the Color Placement

After choosing the colors you want to use, it’s time to decide on the placement. There are tons of different neon eye makeup looks out there. Here are three styles you can start out with:

All-Over Lid Color

One of the easiest ways to rock a neon eyeshadow is to apply one shade all over your lids. One neon color is enough to make a statement without feeling like you’re way out of your comfort zone. This fun yet modern look is a great option for beginners because it’s super simple to do. Simply use a flat eyeshadow brush to pack the color on your lids and blend out the edges.

One trend that’s been all over Instagram and TikTok is neon eyeliner. This refreshing look is one of the most subtle ways to rock neon makeup, and you can create it by using an angled brush to apply eyeshadow as eyeliner.

Multicolor

When it comes to neon makeup, sometimes more is more. Of all the ways to wear neon eyeshadow, this is definitely the boldest — and not for the faint of heart. Use a bright neon eyeshadow all over the lid, then apply a darker shade along the crease and outer corner to add dimension. Additionally, you can apply a third color along the bottom lash line.

Step 3: Prime Your Eyelids

Prime your eyelids before applying neon eyeshadow.

An eye primer creates a smooth and tacky base that helps eyeshadow adhere to your lids. It makes blending smoother and helps your makeup stay on for longer. But more importantly, it ensures that your eyeshadows look super vibrant, which makes it a non-negotiable for applying neon eyeshadow.

Dab a white or beige tinted eye primer onto your lids and gently blend it out using the pad of your ring finger. Cover all the areas where your eye makeup will be applied. For an all-over lid or multicolor look, start from the upper lash line and work your way upward and outwards to the outer corners and the area just below your brows.

Step 4: Apply the Darker Neon Eyeshadow Above the Crease

Choose an eyeshadow that’s one shade darker than your main color. Alternatively, you can use a neutral shadow that’s one or two shades darker than your skin tone. With a fluffy brush, apply this just above the crease and along the outer corner of your eye in a “V” to create a cat-eye shape.

Step 5: Blend It Out

Blend out the eyeshadow using small, circular motions until no harsh edges remain. Try your best to keep the eyeshadow from spreading to the lids.

Step 6: Apply the Brighter Color on the Lid

Apply a brighter neon eyeshadow on the lid.

Take a small flat eyeshadow brush and load it with your neon eyeshadow color of choice. Tap off the excess and gently press the shadow onto your lid. Using a patting or dabbing motion will help pack on more color and reduce fallout. Keep going until you’ve built up the intensity to your liking.

Step 7: Sweep It Along the Lower Lash Line

For the lower lash line, you can use the leftover product on your brush from the last step or a third color. Just be sure to use a clean brush to prevent the colors from looking muddy.

Sweep the eyeshadow along the lower lash line, dragging the brush from the outer to the inner corner.

Step 8: Apply Eyeliner

A classic cat-eye will lengthen and define your eyes.

Depending on the look you’re going for, you can apply eyeliner in your style and color of choice. You can do a classic cat-eye on top of a single or multicolor neon eyeshadow look. Use black eyeliner to lengthen and define your eyes or go all out with a liner in a contrasting color. Additionally, you can use white eyeliner to line the bottom waterline and create the illusion of bigger eyes.

Step 9: Coat Your Lashes With Mascara

A statement-eye look wouldn’t be complete without gorgeously defined lashes. Using a colorful formula like red or blue mascara will add even more visual interest to your look. Apply some falsies for extra glam.

Step 10: Seal With Setting Spray

Once you’ve finished the rest of your makeup, seal everything in with setting spray to ensure that your hard work stays put and lasts all day long!
