How to Apply Eyeliner With Tape

How to Apply Eyeliner With Tape

It’s no secret that winged eyeliner is notoriously difficult to do. In fact, the sheer amount of eyeliner hacks circulating on the internet is a testament to this universal struggle. Everything from bobby pins and dental floss to credit cards and forks promises to help make the process of creating the perfect winged eyeliner easier. But these hacks (which essentially use common household items as a ruler) can still result in uneven wings, especially if you don’t have a steady hand. Thankfully, there are a ton of creative minds that continue to find innovative ways to apply eyeliner. Case in point, this eyeliner hack using tape, which promises a super sharp cat-eye in a matter of seconds.

Created by a TikTok user by the name of @kat_longoria_, this makeup hack makes it possible for anyone to nail a cat eye without needing the precision of a surgeon — or even liquid eyeliner, for that matter. All you need is some medical tape, scissors, and any color of eyeshadow. That’s it!

What Kind of Tape Do You Use for Eyeliner?

While you can technically use any kind of tape for this hack, you should avoid using regular tape. Why? Because the skin around your eyes is very thin and super delicate. The adhesive from the tape can pull on the skin which can loosen it, leading to unwanted laxity, as well as fine lines and wrinkles. The tape can also damage the skin’s protective outer layer and cause a non-allergic skin reaction known as irritant contact dermatitis, which those with sensitive skin are especially prone to. Moreover, you may experience redness, itching, swelling, and a stinging or burning sensation if you’re allergic to tape. And of course, there’s always the risk of pulling out lashes when sticking tape around the eye area, which is the last thing you’d want.

That said, using tape is a way to achieve the perfect cat-eye if you have trouble drawing a straight line with liquid eyeliner. If you want to learn how to apply eyeliner with tape, keep reading for a step-by-step tutorial.

How to Do Eyeliner With Tape

Step 1: Prime Your Eyelids

Priming your eyelids isn’t a necessary step, but it will give the eyeshadow more grip so that your cat-eye lasts all day long. Dab a bit of eye primer onto your lids, then gently blend it out.

Step 2: Cut Three Strips of Tape

For this eyeliner hack, you’ll need three strips of tape: one long strip that’s slightly longer than the width of your face and two shorter strips for each eyelid.

Pro Tip: If you’re using scotch tape, press the strips onto your hand a few times to dull the adhesive so that it’s more gentle on the delicate skin around your eyes.

Step 3: Stick the Tape on Your Face

Take the longer piece of tape and stick the middle point underneath the tip of your nose so that it wraps around the nostrils. Angle either end of the tape towards the tail of your eyebrow so that it creates a “V” shape, making sure that it connects to the outer corner of your eye. Then, place the smaller pieces of tape just above the upper lash line to create a triangle shape. This will create the outline of your wing.

Pro Tip: This is the most crucial part of the look, so take your time to position the tape in order to create the type of eyeliner wing you want.

Step 4: Press Eyeshadow Onto the Empty Space

Use the pad of your index finger or a flat eyeshadow brush to press the eyeshadow into the free space between the two pieces of tape on each eyelid. Don’t worry if you get any product on the tape because this won’t affect the final result. You can be as messy as you want as long as you avoid getting eyeshadow on the skin outside the taped area.

Pro Tip: You can swap eyeshadow for any type of eyeliner.

Step 5: Gently Remove the Tape

Carefully peel off the smaller pieces of tape from your lids, then gently remove the longer piece from your face. You should have two perfectly sharp wings!

Step 6: Refine the Look

Use a pencil or liquid eyeliner to line the rest of your upper lash line. Starting from the middle of your eye, draw a line that tapers towards the inner corner of your eye.

Step 7: Apply Mascara

Once you’re happy with the eyeliner, apply a few coats of your favorite mascara to complete the look!
